'One nurse, her sewing machine and a love of all things fabric'

Welcome to my little corner of the internet. Thanks for coming to visit! Let me tell you a little bit about me and Lavender Mint and how it came to be.......

Meet the Maker

Hello! I'm Roxie, the face behind the sewing machine and Lavender Mint Creations.

I am originally from England but moved to New Zealand in 2010, initially as an OE but loved it so much I forgot to leave!  I'm married to the Mr, good at DIY and all things technical and Mama to Little Miss born in 2015. She is so much fun and I love having the chance to be at home with her lots and watch her grow. We live in rural south Auckland with a fat tabby cat and  some chooks. I adore fabric, flowers and good coffee.  The business name was formed from a combo of my favourite flower, colour and the need to be creative... Lavender Mint Creations is me!

I've been a nurse for over ten years most of which has been spent in emergency care.  Lavender Mint was created when one of my nurse pals was showing off her new lanyard, ordered from the USA. The postage was nearly the same price as the lanyard! It became clear that there was a gap in the market here in New Zealand for handmade medical accessories. So I made a few lanyards for our department, which sold out in a day..... then a few more and some stethoscope covers.

They looked amazing with scrubs and really brightened up our department! Scrub hats were trickier.... The Mr and I trialed a few designs before creating one of our own which fits really well and is super comfy. Thereafter Lavender Mint Creations was born!  I've sent my creations all over NZ and Australia too, sharing handmade happiness to your workplace!  I've now retired from my wild days in ED and love my new role as a part-time hospice nurse. This also gives me more time to sew! Sewing is my happy place and I am lucky enough to have a room that is full of fabric and loveliness.

I have only been sewing for a few years. My trusty Janome was a very well received present from the Mr for my thirtieth birthday.  I went to quilting classes at the local fabric shop and learnt from a bunch of wise ladies who were only to happy to impart their sewing wisdom on me. I loved Nana club! I love choosing fabric combos for products and have a huge fabric stash which I keep in an up-cycled filing cabinet (pictured).

Being a Mum the state of our planet and the issues with waste such as single use plastic really started to concern me. The state we are leaving our planet in for future generations is very important! I made a sandwich bag for the Mr to try out, he used to be a clingfilm fiend! Now we never buy the stuff! I added the straw pouches after Little Miss got a reusable straw for Christmas. So as you can see I only make products which have been well tried and tested.

I love to sew and hope to continue to grow my wee business onward with so many ideas for new products buzzing round in my head. Thank you Pinterest!  I could not do it without the ongoing support of my amazing customers. Thank you for choosing to support handmade and the small locally made business. Aroha x
